We had excellent ATT coverage in all ports, as well as pockets of excellent service at sea in the inside passage (actual ATT, not roaming). Interestingly, in Victoria, the port side of the ship was roaming (Rogers), but the starboard side picked up a strong ATT signal!

Their CDMA service shows no coverage for the major cruise ports in SE Alaska. GSM is also what ATT uses everywhere. So you have choices. Yes your Verizon service will work in Alaska ports - but in outback areas you may do better. With most cell phone services you should be good for a 3-5 mile radius of the port city center.

In Alaska the big players are Verizon, ATT and local outfits GCI and ACS. Recently ACS wireless was bought out by GCI in order to phase out the competition. GCI is GSM and ACS is CDMA. For the most part all phones usually work in and near any community of size, say over 500.No problem with ATT coverage in the cities. On board I keep mine turned off. No cell towers away from the towns and villages. In larger towns Ike Juneau the speeds are okay. In smaller towns that are remote the speeds will be slower. Go into airplane mode leaving port to avoid potential cellular roaming charges from the ship cell tower. Posted May 14, 2018. Most cell carriers charge pretty outrageous fees for cruise ship cell service. We have Verizon and use the Wi-Fi for communications while at sea. When we got back from one trip we discovered a $95 charge for a brief call from the cruise ship.

Basically, in Alaska, if you have a signal, it's going to be a bad AT&T signal or a bad GCI signal. And, even if the signal strength seems like it should be good enough to support data, it likely won't work well, if it works at all. And, even if you have Verizon, you won't fare any better. And now a few observations about the ship's wi-fi.Carnival Cruise Lines. Go.
